Remember: “Grief is a process, not an event”
Seeking emotional support from those around us can be
difficult. You may be afraid to talk to other family members for fear of
upsetting them or crying in front of them. You may believe others are too busy
with their own lives to listen to you.
Most people find the best support comes from those who have
experienced a similar loss. A support group is an excellent place to find shared
losses and experiences. Bereavement Counselors are also available for individual
support and counseling, if needed.
Support Groups Can Help You Overcome Grief By:
Making available trusted and compassionate people who can
be with you to listen to your concerns.
Providing education about the grief process and what you
might expect to happen and feelings you may have during your period of
bereavement.
Learning new ways to cope with the stress of loss and grief
and knowing someone is available in a time of need
To Help Yourself, We Encourage You To:
-
Share your thoughts and ideas out loud to help you
understand the meaning and effect of your loss.
-
Talk about your painful feelings (anger, despair, etc) to
help reduce their intensity.
-
Reminisce about your loved one to help you remember the
life and transition you shared together.
-
Discuss all the changes you are going through in order to
understand and transition to a new beginning.
Comments from group participants:
“I know that I am not alone with my
feelings. Although our stories of life are different, our stories of grief are
similar. We are overwhelmed with grief and find companionship with those who
know our pain.”
E. Allen-Support Group Participant
“I get to share my feelings with a
caring and supportive group of people.”
V. Heller-Support Group Participant
“Being with other people who have dealt
with the loss of a loved one, helps me to verbalize my grief and hurt. Sometimes
it’s the only people you can talk to.”
E. Brown-Support Group Participant
“It is comforting to know other people
are going through the same as you, and you feel ‘normal’ after all.”
D. Bullock-Support Group Participant
“Support Group is just that. It is
support even when you don’t ask for it. I can come to group and say nothing and
they seem to ‘understand’ and it feels ok.”
Support Group Participant
“The group is helpful. Everyone has lost
a loved one… Just be sure to come more than once because the first time you
might not be able to talk about your loss.”
